Frontier Supercomputer Dubbed “World’s Fastest”

Frontier Supercomputer

The U.S. Department of Energy is set to become the owner of the “world’s fastest supercomputer” by 2021. The supercomputer, named Frontier, will be built by AMD (a chip designer) and Cray (a supercomputer manufacturer). Frontier fits into the category of an exascale computer because its processing power is so quick that it must be measured in exaflops, or quintillions (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) of calculations per second. While tech companies are churning out slimmer computers every day, this supercomputer will take up “7,300 square feet of space” and use “90 miles of cabling.” The U.S. government plans to use the computer for a range of noble tasks, including climate research.
