A virtual private network (VPN) is a type of connection you can use over the internet to secure your identity as you surf the web. Many articles by our team have already stressed the importance of online anonymity, and how you can secure your internet sessions with little-to-no knowledge of networking.
A VPN is important because it acts as a barrier between you and other internet users. Although VPNs can be used for streaming services and gaming, the most common use for these networks is privacy and security. Some VPNs are free, and some are paid for, but all VPNs have terms and conditions that you need to abide by. Paid VPNs are higher in quality. They also tend to be more reliable in terms of connectivity and coverage.
You may have tried to connect to a Wi-Fi network before and received the notification that it was an “Unsecured Network.” When you connect to networks that are not secure, it means that your sensitive information is at risk and could be easily compromised! A user could erase his or her digital footprints on a Wi-Fi network by connecting to the network and then enabling the VPN, ensuring that personal information isn’t able to be viewed by anyone else.
VPNs can be added on your iOS device by downloading VPN apps from the App Store, or by configuring your own VPN profile in your device’s Settings app. Most of the time, downloading a VPN service from the App Store is the easiest route to take.
